Key Words

Industrial Clusters, Paradox of Place, Anchor Companies & Seed Companies, Network Effects, Moore’s Law & Huang’s Law, Outsourcing Dilemma & Foundry Model, Semiconductor Revitalization & Economic Security, Triple Helix Model

Course Objectives

Course Goals

Course Schedule

1.
- Clusters: stakeholders and frameworks; measuring clusters; attracting or retaining people (the Mobile and the Rooted)
- Defining tech clusters; how does a tech cluster remain a tech cluster?
2.
- Innovation cycles in the networked economy: recurring (Moore’s Law; 3G4G5G) and non-recurring; when multiple cycles combine
- Network effects
- Hyperscaler capex boom
- Innovation cycles of interest today
3.
- Silicon Valley: what put the silicon in Silicon Valley? Why Silicon Valley, and not New Jersey or Boston or New York? Why did Silicon Valley outgrow Boston? Seed companies and anchor companies; culture, immigration
4.
-Seed companies and anchor companies: examples from Portland (Silicon Forest), San Diego (Qualcomm) and more; ripple effects; culture; governance; what happens when an anchor company struggles
5.
- Hsinchu, Taiwan; ITRI and the role of recruiting and returnees; TSMC (the indispensable company?) roots via technology licensed from RCA; TSMC and Hsinchu today
6.
- Harnessing universities; economic transitions, turnarounds and “Eds and Meds” (educational and medical institutions); research parks: the market is more crowded these days; pre-conditions for success; who operates the research park? accelerators; universities in the triple helix
7.
- Semiconductors, Part 1 & 2
- Intel Corporation: Outsourcing Dilemma case, 2022; three things Intel did not do; Product Intel vs Factory Intel
- How can Factory Intel regain relevance?
8.
- Summary, Reflections, and Application
